Working Days & Hours: Monday through Thursday
Monday: 6pm to 12am
Tuesday: 6pm to 12am
Wednesday: 6pm to 12am
Thursday: 7pm to 1am

The Social Freelancer, Music is an execution-focused role responsible for maintaining the voice, velocity, and cultural relevance of Complex Music’s social platforms during weeknight hours. This role works closely with the Social Editor, Music to ensure seamless coverage of breaking music news, live moments, trending conversations, and community engagement during their shift. This position is ideal for someone deeply plugged into music culture who thrives in real-time environments and understands how to translate artist moments, internet discourse, and breaking news into platform-native social content.

What You'll Do

    • Execute the voice of Complex Music across all social platforms (Instagram, Twitter/X, TikTok, Facebook), exhibiting strong editorial judgment and audience-first framing.
    • Create, curate, and publish timely social content that supports breaking music news, live events, releases, and trending conversations.
    • Serve as the primary point of social coverage during assigned shifts, escalating major moments to the Social Editor, Music when necessary.
    • Lead community management during coverage windows, including comment moderation and DM management, with a strong understanding of Complex’s tone and standards.
    • Surface, pitch, and package viral, breaking, and social-friendly music moments to the broader editorial and social teams.
    • Identify emerging memes, trends, sounds, and artist-driven moments at the cusp of virality and quickly activate on them.
    • Develop quick-turn creative assets using Photoshop, Premiere Pro, and/or CapCut.
    • Support broader social goals (growth, engagement, views, traffic) by executing Music-specific tactics and real-time optimizations.
    • Maintain awareness of competitive music media and social accounts to ensure Complex Music maintains a distinct and authoritative lane.

Who You Are


    • Requirements
    • 2–3 years of experience in social media (music-focused experience strongly preferred).
    • Deep understanding of music culture, including hip-hop, R&B, emerging artists, and how music intersects with internet culture, fashion, sports, and entertainment.
    • Strong familiarity with the Complex brand voice, particularly within Music.
    • Excellent writing, editing, and headline instincts with the ability to make fast, confident decisions.
    • Proven fluency across major social platforms (Instagram, Twitter/X, TikTok, Facebook)
    • Comfortable working weeknights and occasional holidays, especially around live events, releases, and breaking news.
    • Strong instincts for what performs socially and a demonstrated ability to drive engagement and audience action.
    • Highly organized, self-directed, and proactive with the ability to manage coverage independently.Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, Premiere Pro, and/or CapCut.

$28 - $28 an hour
The Pay Range, which consists of rate of pay per hour, for this position is listed. Actual pay will vary based on factors including, but not limited to location, experience, and performance.
